There are over hundred recipes for making easy mashed potatoes. The recipe for easy mashed potatoes calls for two and a half pounds of regular potatoes or you can choose russet potatoes for a variety. The other basic ingredients you will need are 1/4 of milk or half and half, a 1/4 of butter, 3/4 teaspoon of salt and pepper.
The first thing to do is peel your potatoes, but it is quicker to leave the peel on. This adds texture to your easy mashed potatoes. If you choose to keep the peel on just ensure that you wash your potatoes thoroughly before boiling. Dice and cut your potatoes in large cubes and place in large pot, fill pot with water to cover your cubed potatoes. The potatoes should only take approximately fifteen minutes or until tender.
After potatoes are tender drain the water it is also recommended to put in a ricer for smoother potatoes or simply mash them in a large mixing bowl. You should mash until no lumps remain or leave some lumps if you prefer. Slowly add milk or half and half a little at a time until you have the potatoes the texture you like them. Add butter, salt, pepper, mixing until potatoes are your desired consistency.
A great thing about mashed potatoes is that you can add other ingredients for added flavor. For example, if you like garlic you can add five cloves of minced garlic to the potatoes after potatoes have been drained. For this great recipe and others check out www.southernfood.com.
